Not all online schools are properly accredited or offer an actual college education. These schools are called degree mills. A degree mill is a school where real life experience is counted more than class credit so students can breeze through to their degree in a matter of months. Several prominent online schools are known as Degree Mills and because of that employers or other academics look down on anyone who has a degree from a Degree Mill school. Degree Mill schools will promise quick degrees with little effort or work on the part of the student. Degree Mill schools are popular with executives who need an advanced degree to stay competitive but don’t have the time to attend classes or do a lot of actual school work.
Which Schools Are Degree Mills
When researching online schools, such as Trinity College of the Bible, it can be difficult to know if that school is a legitimate school or a Degree Mill but there are clues to watch for. If the school literature stresses that at this college life experience counts significantly toward the degree, it’s probably a Degree Mill school. One sure fire way to find a list of degree mill colleges is to perform an Internet search. Reading reviews of colleges on consumer and education websites can help determine if that school is a degree mill or not based on what past and current student say about it. No one at the school will say directly that it is a Diploma Mill school, but if it is a Diploma Mill the literature about the school and the programs offered by the school will stress life and previous job experience over and over again and promise an advanced degree within a matter of months. There is no substitute for hard work, if an online school promises something that seems to good to be true, it probably is to good to be true.
Degree Mill Degrees Can Hurt A Career
While having an advanced degree or even a bachelor’s degree can be necessary to get a job in certain fields, having a degree form a Degree Mill can actually hurt a career. Employers don’t have a lot of respect for degrees that come from Degree Mills because there is so little work involved in getting a degree from a Degree Mill. A better way to impress an employer is to put in the hard work and get an advanced degree from a school that isn’t a Degree Mill. A degree that requires effort by the student is sure to impress current and prospective employers.
